In France, higher education studies are organized in the European “LMD” system (Licence, Master, Doctorat) or Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate’s Degrees.
Each academic year is divided into 2 semesters of 30 ECTS credits. Each semester is comprised of several modules :
At the University of Toulon, like those in French Higher Education, there are two types of courses :
These courses take place in auditoriums for between 100 and 400 students and students take notes. At the end of the class, the professors sometimes provide students with a photocopied supporting document for students to use as a study guide.
take place in smaller groups. They reinforce the theoretical aspects dealt with in lectures through practical applications.
In professional trainings offered by the university (2-Year University degrees, Professional Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees, Engineering Degrees), internships and group projects are required in addition to lectures and tutorials.
There are two types of assessment in higher education in France.
Continuous Assessment which regularly evaluates a student’s knowledge and ability in each subject taught ;
Exams which assess a student’s general knowledge in all subjects. Exams take place twice a year during exam week.
Each degree has its own Exam Policy which precisely defines how knowledge is assessed. Every student may consult Exam Policies (lien vers formation, règlement).
At the University, courses are normally offered as a part of a module (Unité d’Enseignement). Degrees will include a certain number of modules, some are compulsory while others may be optional. Once validated, students keep the benefit of modules they have passed.
In France, students are assessed on a scale of 0 to 20, with 0 being the lowest mark and 20 the highest.
