Doctoral Schools



The University of Toulon (UTLN) has 2 Doctoral Schools (ED), ED 509 “Comparative Euro-Mediterranean Civilisations and Societies” and ED 548 “Sea and Sciences”. They are governed by the School of Doctoral Studies.

The School of Doctoral Studies

The School of Doctoral Studies is responsible for coordinating doctoral studies for the University by participating in the standardization of procedures for enrolment, thesis viva and mediation by drafting “Charte des Thèses.” The School of Doctoral Studies promotes activities undertaken by doctoral students and assists in the recruitment of Graduate Student professors.

The School of Doctoral Studies also organises trainings of general interest to all PhD students or events aimed at facilitating workforce integration, in addition to specific trainings offered by each Doctoral School. The School of Doctoral Studies is assisted by the support of the Office of Doctoral Studies

ED 509 “Comparative Euro-Mediterranean Civilisations and Societies”

The Doctoral School (ED) 509 is an interdisciplinary school founded in 2008 and includes fields related to “Comparative Euro-Mediterranean Civilisations and Societies”, one of the central interdisciplinary areas of research of the University’s scientific strategy. ED 509 is made up of five research units from the University of Toulon’s humanities and social sciences (Law, Economics, Management, Literature, Humanities as well as Information and Communication Sciences).

ED 548 “Sea and Sciences”

This interdisciplinary doctoral school includes eight research units from the University of Toulon’s Faculty of Sciences and Technology. The school encourages all scientific approaches dealing with Marine Science that have strong potential. In addition, the school also supports research activities that don’t necessarily have a relationship with the sea, but are nevertheless coherent with the University’s scientific strategy : Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Automation, Life Sciences and Environmental Sciences.
