Toulon Seminar "The Social Gospel in the American South : A Revolutionary Movement in Regional Religion"

lundi 9 octobre à 17h en salle W1.115

Abstract :

The American South is typically understood as a region dominated by conservative Protestant religious groups who focus primarily on an otherworldly religion that privileges the saving of souls over the need to address contemporary social and economic problems. Through a close look at a single institution—The Missionary Training Institute of Nashville, Tennessee (1905–1915)—this seminar will challenge that description of southern religion by considering whether the school is just a revolutionary moment or part of a longer movement in the region’s religion.
